Climbing the height of Mount Everest from sea level has been the latest successful charity challenge, completed by Daz White and his team from RAF Scampton.
On 28th May, the team began the assent using an indoor climbing tower, with a time limit of 24 hours to climb 8848m, the equivalent distance from sea level to the summit of Mount Everest.
Core Telecom have been proudly sponsoring the team throughout their training efforts as they continue to raise both money and awareness for Core’s designated charity, Dreams & Wishes.
Nine climbers took it in turns, an hour at a time, to take part in the challenge which saw them climb up the 6.5 metre tower up to 100 times within the hour, all in aid of raising vital funds for the charity.
Team leader, Daz said: “The team became very weary through the night and average climbs dropped from over 100 down to 40-50. This was the time when the team needed its most inspiration and a small photograph of Macsen Geiss was enough to do the trick.”
Macsen was one of Dreams & Wishes’ Young Ambassadors, after the charity worked closely with him throughout his illness. Sadly, Macsen passed away last year, and Daz, a family friend, decided to get involved with the charity to thank them for everything they did for Macsen.
Marking the 60th anniversary of the first person to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the team made sure the day was celebrated in style and completed the challenge with 20 minutes to spare.
This challenge is the second in a series of events that Daz and his team are planning to complete, all in aid of supporting the charity and raising all-important funds. The team have been in training since the beginning of the year, and their training has been supported by Core, who have provided specialised training kits and equipment.
Previously, the team completed a 10km run and they are now putting the final touches to plans for a 24hr bikeathon before the final event, where the team plan to pull a Red Arrow Jet for one mile across Lincoln.
