Ofcom: Important changes to your 084 and 087 number

The communications regulator Ofcom are making important changes to the way consumers are charged for calling your business if you use 084 or 087 numbers. This move has been made following research which found that people are often confused by how much it costs to call these numbers. The new changes are being introduced to make the charges more transparent and easier to understand which is great news for both businesses and their customers.

Whether your number is supplied by Core Telecom or another provider we feel it is important to ensure all current users are aware of these new changes to ensure consumers continue to feel comfortable calling non-geographic numbers.

What’s Changing?

The cost of calling an 084 or 087 number will be split into two parts:

  1. An access charge, which will be charged by the customers phone provider i.e. their landline provider BT.
  2. A service charge, which will be set by the 08 number provider, such as Core Telecom.

What do current users need to do?

From 1st July 2015 you will need to ensure that you clearly display the call charges where ever you advertise your 084 or 087 number. Now is the time to begin to review your marketing materials to ensure you comply.

Where you do advertise your number you will need to include wording displayed as, “Calls to this number are charged at 5p per minute plus your telephone provider’s access charge.”

Further information can be found the http://www.ukcalling.info/industry website, or alternatively please feel free to speak to one of our in house experts by calling 0844 504 0000 (calls to this number are charged at 5p per minute, plus your telephone providers access charge).
