Fifty of the UK’s iconic black cabs are to be kitted out with the latest 4G technology, it has been announced by one of the UK’s mobile network operators.
EE has revealed that following their rollout of the 4G network across England, it will now place the high-speed web connection into the taxis as part of a three-month trial.
Forty cabs in London and ten in Birmingham will be fitted with a state-of-the-art MiFi wireless router which supports the 4G network, letting customers take advantage of the ultra-fast connection completely free.
The trial will be available to anyone with a smartphone, regardless of their network provider, letting every passenger sample the super-fast internet whilst on the move, all the customer will have to do is send a text once they enter the cab to receive a connection code.
Stephen McHugh, Director of Brand at EE said: ‘We hope this trial will demonstrate the benefits of a superior online experience as users can browse, download, catch up on emails, tweet and check Facebook literally at the speed of light. We can’t make taxi journeys any faster but we can certainly speed up people’s smartphones!’
